The purpose of parenting is not to teach empathy to your child, it is to learn empathy from your child.
What if that is true?
If it is, what might you change in your view and experience surrounding your child?
I used to think that the purpose of parenting was to produce a “productive member of society”, but then I realized we don’t give birth to employees.
I then thought that the purpose of parenting was to make my child into a kind and compassionate individual, but then the thought of “making” someone into something didn’t sound very kind or compassionate.
Now I experience the purpose of parenting to be one of student, and the teacher has called for class to start with their birth into this life. Time to pay attention, I have much to learn about empathy.
We have been given two eyes, two ears, yet only one mouth. Perhaps it is because we are meant to listen more, see more, and speak much less than we currently do. The purpose of parenting is to close your mouth and open your heart.
Are you ready to listen to what your child is here to tell you?
Are you ready to observe what your child is here to show you?
What can you do with this new awareness?
